From theory to action: Facilitator and teacher Rod Napier, Ph.D. translates the fundamentals of effective leadership into everyday practice for individuals and teams. After 40 years in the field, Rod’s primary work continues to be in executive team building and leadership development. He also maintains a select coaching practice among a small circle of leaders.

Currently, Rod teaches graduate courses in the Coaching Programme at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught Executive Team Dynamics at the Wharton School from 1995 to 2002, and as a professor at Temple University from 1965–77, where Rod contributed to the formative years of the group dynamics movement.

In 1975, he introduced 360-degree feedback, which is now central to most programmes of leadership development. Rod always works to move ideas into action and he has authored or co-authored a dozen books in the field including:-

  • Measuring What Matters, co-authored with R. McDaniel, 2006. Unlike much of the complex and costly management literature that's come out in the past decade—books that require a consultant to interpret—this book translates the essentials of metrics management in terms that managers and team leaders can use immediately.
  • Groups: Theory and Experience co-authored MattiGershenfeld,2003 now in its seventh edition, since first published in 1973, this book remains a trendsetter in the field of group dynamics and small group behaviour. Its accessible style blends research and theory with practical, real-life examples.

After his 40 years’ experience in his field - Rod has integrated the lessons he's learned into several core principles. These include allotting sufficient time of the right intensity, exercising discipline and rigour to change habits, understanding and developing the fundamentals of leadership and team building and learning to move seamlessly from theory to application.
